The image of the doorknob is very powerful. I don't know about the rest of you, but after reading this book I can't look at doorknobs without thinking of this scene. And in terms of the story, it's symbolic also of passing a point of no return -- the instant Lord John turns that doorknob and sees what's happening on the other side, he can't ignore it or wish it away; he has to find a way to deal with it. -- LJG Discussion board
