Subject: Yes, that is how I see them both - "solitary toughness" is a nice way to put it. It's also another aspect of DG's neat trick with the notion of the "outlander." Who would seem more "inside" the English social order/ruling class than Lord John Grey? Yet his family name has been tarnished and he himself lives outside the law when he loves. These two have indeed a shared experience of isolation; it brings them together temporarily and superficially at Ardsmuir, and is still in the mix when they are eventually brought back together in the New World as trusting and affectionate friends.
In reply to: maddiej 's message, "That's an interesting thought. Do you think that might be one more instance of the common ground he has with Jamie? That both are (at least sometimes) outlawed and outcast, and know what it is to live among people who would like to kill them for who they are? It's harder for Jamie to hide, so he deals with it differently, but I think they both have a solitary toughness born of the need to protect themselves." on 14:49:35 10/30/07 Tue
