Subject: Lord John and Stephan (AKA The Graf!)--->

I’ve been thinking about John and Stephan’s relationship, and was wondering what you lasses think;

One of the scenes which struck me in this book, was the scene in which John examines what had once been Stephen's arm. It was a very tender scene, and brought tears to my eyes. After re-reading PM and Succubus, I am still pondering John's relationship with the Graf. What is their relationship, what purpose does it serve within the books?

Even more, I am wondering about Stephen himself. What I mean is, do you see Stephen as a straight man who had by random fate found himself attracted to John, or instead, as somewhere in the middle? I haven’t gotten the impression that he is straight out gay, but that could just be me. I tend to lean toward the first.

Does Stephen exist in the books (other than as a scene stealer ;) ) to show us another complicated layer of these relationships John has- friend, lover, friend I wish was my lover, etc? Like Jaime, Stephen is a man accustomed to violence and war, he is in many ways similar to John, and can understand John, unlike a man who has not lived by violence or war. He is also physically beautiful and somewhat similar to Jaime- could it be that John is merely projecting his unrequited feelings for Jaime onto yet another dead end source?
