Subject: Well, we can see my note below in regards to this, but I have to say, I don't think this book has to stand alone. If we were to read it that way, how could we gain such a deep appreciation, affection, or understanding for the characters, their motivations and their actions? We know that LJ has reason to fear exposure, portrayed in the Outlander books and in PM. And yet we also know from reading this book that as a man of honour, he must do what he knows is right, regardles of the cost. Isn't that a major theme here- his struggle to do right by Percy despite the personal risk, and the very personal betrayal?-->

While I know maddiej is right about John's only reason for being present (blackmail), and the unpremeditated instinctiveness of his behavior, I do think it turns into something more, and something that does have parallels with Jamie at Gavin's execution, because of the crowd, and the risk of guilt by association. >>>>" on 13:18:36 10/15/07 Mon

As a homosexual man in an age where it is very dangerous to be so, I understand why he might be reticent to help Bates without added incentive (blackmail). But John is a man of compasion and concience, which will not allow a man (fellow officer, convicted sodomight, or anything else) to suffer a grusome and horrible death. I agree- what we see here is John's humanity.
