Subject: So interesting! Thanks Melva. I should have looked it up, as I definitely did not know about the chamber pot association! I had been thinking of Hal's face more along the lines of the 2nd "British" definition: "having an assumed solemn, serious, or earnest expression or manner : piously or hypocritically solemn," in this wonderful exchange with his brother. They of the expressive eyebrows -- I see them both being able to speak volumes with a raised eyebrow here, or a twitch of the lip there... *g* But it is wonderful to find out that this expression has such a history.
In reply to: Carol P 's message, "Dang. I've heard ( and used) that expression all my life, I thought it was a Southern term! Priggish, narrow-minded, humorless and disapproving pretty much says it. I did wonder why DG used it, but I should have known it really wasn't just a slip-of-the-pen use of an expression DG uses herself." on 19:04:41 09/24/07 Mon
