Mr. Bowles showed up in LJPM- he is a guy who has information on a great many people which he uses to blackmail them. He also had contact with the gentleman who runs Lavender House- Dickie Casewell. I think that John is afraid of him because Mr. Bowls is in a position to blackmail him should he ever come accross information that John has been a visitor to Lavender House. For that matter, I am pretty sure John is afraid that Mr. Bowles already knows, but is storing the information in case he should ever need it.
