Subject: Hal is short for Harold. As for the titles, he would have had a whole string of them. By choosing not to use his duke's title, he probably just moved on to the next one down, Lord Melton. For example, Prince Charles is Prince of Wales, but also Duke of Rothesay, Lord of the Isles, etc etc.

  • Please, someone help me with this. I must be extremely dense or read to fast. Why is LJG called "Lord", when the youngest son of an Earl should be addressed as "Honoraable". Sigh. (NT) -- Conmama, 11:59:15 09/01/07 Sat

  • This is addressed on p. 12. LJG uses the form of address for the younger son of a duke, which he is still officially entitled to. His brother Hal could do something similar, but he refuses. (As an American, I find these distinctions quite baffling, but the explanation for this one *is* in the book....) (NT) -- Karen, 13:31:48 09/01/07 Sat
