Subject: Whether his actions were admirable or not is not a factor, John just did what he had to do, i.e. he did his duty. The praise was a surprise for him because people normally don't expect praise for acting properly. John didn't actually do anything out of the ordinary for a soldier and an officer, Percy was impressed because he'd never seen a battle. The difference in their reactions is mainly one of experience.
