It gave me as a reader a "place" to fit myself in relation to him -- it's a pretty seductive fantasy in its own right just to think about having a man of his wit, charm, strength, and beauty, focus his attention and affection on making you laugh, helping you figure out your "messy" life, and just generally making it his business to keep you company and let you keep him company! Pretty appealing even without sexual tension. And there are a couple of moments where their banter gets slightly racy - fun but "safe." He makes no deep emotional -- or sexual, obviously -- demands on her. He has decided to love her because she is Jamie's daughter, but then he comes to love her because she's wonderful in her own right. He is simply her friend, and he's a man to be reckoned with.
