Subject: Oh, I can't believe this fun discussion is underway and my DDs are running wild all over the place, stuck inside on this rainy Sunday! I will try to convey this next thought briefly, though I may have to come back to articulate it more coherently. >>>
In reply to: teddie 's message, "What a treat it is to get the "blanks" filled in for us, regardless of the fact that it is drawn out a bit (thereby enhancing our anticipation!) Not only is DG excellent at her craft, but she is so generous to give us more and more of these characters. Yes; now I am *truly* citing the obvious." on 09:16:14 09/09/07 Sun

I confess I have mixed feelings about some of the dangling threads in the John/Jamie relationship and some of the interactions in this new book. I too am (and remain) confused by the one scene that's been much-discussed already, and I do still have a hard time reconciling what's actually in the book and what we see of the two of them later in the main series, with the exegesis of the scene that DG has (so responsively!) posted. I guess my inner jury is still out on whether I can believe that John, later in life, when he meets Bree, for example, would jest about "forcing" Jamie if he knew about Jamie's rape. Please know I don't mean to start trouble by bringing this up here, just can't avoid it when thinking about the new insights into this amazing relationship that are presented in BOTB. Because I love the complicated John/Jamie friendship so much, I have spent loads of time (OK, way too much time! *g*) thinking about how awful it will/would be for John to know about Jamie's history/Wentworth. I do think he would have a gut-churning, visceral reaction, but I didn't think we would find out that he knew about it so much earlier in the chronology. OTOH, if Herself says that this is so, then we must needs seek to comprehend their future interactions in this light. Of course it's partly that we are being subjected to delayed gratification, learning that we will have to wait for THE SCOTTISH PRISONER in order to find out how matters will ensue between them. (Sorry that this is not terribly well put!)
