I'm not trying to be rude here, but you should probably go to a professional hair colorist to safely and properly eliminate the black. Since your hair is dark (I'm assuming at least one to two shades lighter than your natural hair color and/or the hair color you desire) and you've been dying it for years, it is near impossible to take out the black if it's permanent and/or a demi/semi-permanent (at least one to two shades darker than your natural hair color) that you've been depositing on your hair for the last few years. This is something that requires a professional as it will probably involve, color remover, bleach and high volume (30-40+) developer, and intense conditioning treatment. It should take several hours, if not several appointments to safely fix and lighten your hair(depending on what shade you now desire and how much lighter it it in comparison to your current black hair color). I cannot determine this, because I have not seen your hair. I would not recommend trying to do this at home because it could severely damage and discolor your hair if done improperly. Washing your hair may break a few color molecules down, but it won't do anything if you've been depositing it for years and it's permanent or at least two shades darker than your natural color/color you desire. Also, I don't think your hair is in terrible condition unless you've been washing it too much and not letting natural oils come through. Washing it will only put it in dryer and worse condition (I know I've been there...I know that I have to go to a salon professional if a demi-color/toner comes out too dark and I cannot get it to lift after 3-4 days of intense clarifying shampoo washing; it's pretty worthless to try on your own if it's not lifting after 4 days. Your hair may not fall out so much, as it will break if you wash it too much and it is extremely dry.

You may view it as too much money to get a salon professional to do this (it could cost $200 or more depending on where you live and how difficult a color correction this is to complete properly...again, how many levels lighter you want to go will determine how much work will be needed for this and the final cost of such a job), but it is a better choice to go the professional route (be selective when doing this and consult with a colorist before getting anything done...your colorist should explain every step from beginning to end...if they don't seem to have any clue as to how to go about this kind of job and cannot seem to explain the reasoning behind what they plan on doing, stay away!).

Your hair should not be in danger of falling out or breaking off with a moderate lift job (I don't think it's good to even go to a color professional and try to get a black-to-platinum color job in one appointment...you really can mess up your hair and have problems...if that is what you desire, then do it in stages so your hair won't become severely damaged).

The other option, as the other poster claimed, is simply to wait for your roots to come in long enough and then cut your hair off...I personally would not want to do that and think your answer is in seeing a salon professional. Hope this advice is helpful!
