Okay, check the wording on what I said...

Having a band with a female lead singer tends to be seen as playing with gimmick fire to begin with

I didn't say it constitutes a gimmick per se, but it tends to be perceived that way in cynical music markets. Right or not, these sorts of bands can have to overcome a bit of a credibility gap. Garbage got saddled with that rep initially (shook it when SM showed her vocal chops), No Doubt went the other way (where Gwen overshadowed the band) but had some initial public cynisicm over the look, Jackalope managed to duck it etc. When a woman, particularly an attractive one, fronts a band the gimmick or eye-candy rep tends to creep forth, even if it's not deserved. It sucks, but IMO it tends to happen.

Of course, this isn't necessarily limited to gender either - attractive male frontmen (or attractive male entire bands - we usually call them boy bands) can get the same level of suspicion from non-pop music circles (pop circles tend to let it slide a bit more), but in those cases, the benefit of the doubt goes to the guy (i.e. only if he sucks, then they're written off) rather than in the case of the girl - they have to prove they're not eye-candy. Double-standard? Yeah, but it unfortunately exists.

So to clarify, I wasn't saying that bands with female leads are gimmicky by nature, I was saying that audiences can be quite cynical by nature (especially in goth/industrial music circles) towards this sort of thing, especially (in this case) if they can't sing.

Hope that clarifies.
