Subject: OMG JONEN RULZ!!!111oneoneone... *ahem*

Sorry for people to have to read that, but I figured I'd better set the mood for this post.

According to a convention's website, Jhonen Vasquez is coming to a Toronto convention. Now, I've always been more of a Dirge fan - don't get me wrong, JV's got some neat stuff, but the insane fuss is beyond me. Regardless, I'm happy that one of the dynamic duo is making it north of the border and into eastern standard time.

There's only one little problem... well, the convention is run by rather nasty people. They get good guests, mind you, but, um...

...well, lets put it this way: they have paid staff and security guards to make sure you've paid. The people responsibile for the guests (expect the ones you pay extra for) get a t-shirt, if that. I've walked around and seen people sitting in the guest's podium waiting for the guest to arrive. I've also had to duck live swords that congoers were waving around. Security hasn't seen any problem with this.

(As an aside, this was also the convention busted for selling illegal weapons in their dealers' room. After doing it for years despite vocal warnings from people to the con organizers)

In recent years, this con has gone from sci-fi/Anime con to sci-fi/anime/comic/horror/gaming convention. As of yet, they haven't bothered to expand their con space to reflect this; last time, the comic people were sandwiched into table spaces four feet wide. Since one or two of the comic people were rather popular the others' tables were completely inaccessible by lines of people with no security to control them. JV seems to be put in the "horror" section, which may make it nicer on him, but if the con organizers don't realize (or don't care) that JV's got a lot of, well, special fans, he's going to have a nightmare weekend.

I'm stoked that he's going to be there, but part of me doesn't want to even be part of the mob that will likely be the manifestation of all JV recoils in horror at. Ah well. That, and I'm worried over the stupid; the only good news is that usually the con is overpopulated mostly by anime voice-actor stalkers (a year or two ago one actually was bitten by a fan) and not comic-artist stalkers, but this may change. My only hope is they don't bother to actually hype him enough.

On a lighter note, should I get a little joking payback on behalf of Dirge by showing up with my copies of Lenore begging for him to sign them? [grin] They are the same person, right?

Oh and in random productive bits I did a new piece called Unwelcome which people might like. Brush & ink on bristol board.
