Subject: Berr-Shorter Baseball Series To Be Played at State Mutual Stadium

BERRY-SHORTER TO RENEW BASEBALL RIVALRY AT STATE MUTUAL STADIUM
Rome Braves’ Home Field To Host Local College Rivalry For First Time;
Tickets To Go On Sale Thursday at Berry, Shorter and State Mutual Stadium

MOUNT BERRY, Ga....Months after hosting the South Atlantic League Championship Series, State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Ga., will serve as the host to another heated series when Berry College and Shorter College hook up for a pair of doubleheaders early in their 2004 schedules. That announcement was made today by the head coaches from both schools and Rome Braves general manager Michael Dunn.

The Vikings and Hawks will play doubleheaders on Feb. 17 and March 2 at State Mutual Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. on both days. Berry will serve as the host school in the first matchup, while Shorter will be the home team in the second twin bill.

Tickets will go on sale at State Mutual Stadium and the athletics
offices at both Berry and Shorter beginning Thursday. All seats are general admission and tickets are four dollars apiece.

“The Berry-Shorter series is always a great series,” Berry head coach David Beasley said. “Our kids are excited to play in the new facility, but the great thing is the people in the community will have an opportunity to see us play Shorter. In the past, the games have always been in the afternoon during the middle of the week.”

Beasley’s comments were echoed by Shorter head coach Matt Larry.

“This will be great for people in the community to see both Shorter and Berry play,” Larry said. “Neither team has lights at its own field, so this gives people a chance to come out after work and see the teams play under the lights.”

Beasley said that Dunn and the Braves showed the enthusiasm that made moving the games to State Mutual Stadium possible.

“I want to thank Mr. Dunn and the Rome Braves front office,” Beasley said. “They have been outstanding to work with, and they do a great job. You can tell that they really care about this community and were excited about allowing us to use their facility to showcase the area’s two major colleges.”

Larry made sure not to downplay the significance of the games to the players. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime for the players, to be able to play in such a beautiful ballpark,” Larry said.

Last season, Berry and Shorter split the season series. Berry won the first game 2-1, the teams played to a 6-6 tie in the second meeting and Shorter won the final game 11-10. The cross-town rivalry between the two schools has proven to be one of the best in Southeastern college sports, and athletic competitions between the two schools draw large crowds and capture the imaginations of residents all over the city of Rome. The two schools are separated by just 2.5 miles.

Built in 2003, State Mutual Stadium is the home of the 2003 SAL champion Rome Braves, who won the league championship in their inaugural season in Rome after relocating from Macon, Ga. The Braves averaged nearly 4,000 fans per game in its first season in Rome, 11th best among full season Class A teams. The Rome Braves are an affiliate of the National League East champion Atlanta Braves.
