Subject: Berry No. 9 in National Directors' Cup Standings

BERRY COLLEGE NINTH IN MIDSEASON DIRECTORS' CUP NATIONAL STANDINGS

MOUNT BERRY, Ga....Bolstered by strong national finishes by the men's soccer and cross country teams, Berry College's athletics department finds itself ranked ninth nationally in the United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup midseason NAIA standings.

The standings measure the overall success of entire athletics
departments at colleges and universities nationwide. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports throughout the year. Final standings will be announced upon the completion of the spring season.

The fall standings were based on results in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball and football.

Berry does not field a football team.

Berry posted 175 points during the fall, just one fewer than No. 8 Concordia (Calif.). The Vikings soccer team reached the semifinals of the national tournament, while the cross country squad finished 16th at the NAIA national meet, giving Berry the bulk of its points.

Simon Fraser (B.C.), sits atop the standings with 299 points after a fall in which it won the NAIA championship in women's cross country, finished in the top 10 in men's cross country and women's soccer and 17th in men's soccer. Azusa Pacific (Calif.) is in second place, followed by Malone (Ohio). Biola (Calif.), Fresno Pacific (Calif.) and Mary (N.D.) are tied for fourth place. Those schools are followed in the top 10 by St. Francis (Ind.), Concordia, Berry and Madonna (Mich.).

Berry is picking up right where it left off after finishing ninth in
the final standings in 2002-03. The Vikings and Lady Vikings are hoping to continue a recent trend of improving. Berry finished 39th in the standings in 2000-01, then jumped to 26th the following year before returning to the top 10 last year. Berry's best finish in the standings was a seventh-place spot in 1996-97.
