Subject: Snark Weighs In & Spicy's Top Ten - 21 MAY 2001

I've been meaning to post earlier but it's been one hell of a month in May, that's all I gotta' say. Onto my comments.

First, I really enjoy reading Snark Weighs In. Why? Because Snark not only follows OLTL but he follows the industry & genre as well. He's wicked initutive (sp?) and he's got a good "bead" as what's going on behind the scenes.

I've been watching soaps since I was 12-13 starting with the Luke & Laura glory days in the early 80's. I used to watch the entire ABC line up back then. In 84 I got into ATWT when Marland was writing. I caught Meg Ryan, Marissa Tomei, Julianne Moore. ATWT has been a great stomping ground for these Hollywood actresses to fine tune their craft. Also coming from ATWT is Jason Biggs. When I was in the Army I picked up an interest in B&B, Y&R, and GL. I'm not just restricted to one soap, even though I've got like what? 4 websites dedicated to OLTL? LOL!! No really, I catch AMC & ATWT when I can. ATWT is doing some great stuff and Scheffer is a breath of fresh air not only for the show he writes for but for the network and the genre in general. He's an EXAMPLE that other networks should try to emulatate in order to make themselves more competitive but then I digress.

Anyway, The point I was trying to make is that I'm interested in not only OLTL but in the genre as well so I enjoy when Snark takes a look at the whole medium.

This week Snark addresses OLTL and recent comments made by Robert S. Woods and Darlene Vogel regarding their characters and their on-screen romance in a satire. It's brilliant! Snark has an excellent way of getting his point across.

One point that upsets me as a fan is Robert Wood's careless comments about his character, his character's past "romances" and his "I don't give a sh*t attitude" if you like it or not" attitude. He disrespects his fan base when he does not acknowledge the fact that Bo & Nora and were a couple worth rooting for and keeping together. Woodsy's said, "If you don't like it, don't watch" Well, I don't. I fast forward. And it surprises me that he and Darlene Vogel actually think their on-screen pairing has fans. I don't see it. Certainly not on the internet. Who knows what they recieve via snail nail but on Media Domain I don't see posts gushing about Bo & Melanie. I think he thinks he's a legend in his own mind.

As for Vogel she's been quoted as making the control room cry? Well, that's not something to brag about. The control room doesn't count. It's the fans. It's people like me who you should worry about making cry because ultimately I'm the demo you want to stick around. Trust me, OLTL goes up against ATWT in my area and it's very easy for me to SWITCH THE DIAL and watch Emmy Award Actress Martha Byrne cry and feel something for the character she plays as she does.

Both Woodsy & The Dar's recent comments show how out of synch they are with today's soap viewers. And it takes a pretty savy actor or actress to stay on top of it. Woodsy is used to the old days when the net wasn't around. Well the internet is around and soap fan do take the medium and I would recommend an actor or actress become somewhat net savy because there's a lot of free promotion to be done on the net. The net can make you look cool or like a fool. Check out kassie de Paiva's website for example. Kassie may not like the net but you know what? She knows how to use the net for her gain. More so than Woodsy.

My advice to both Woodsy & Darlene? Get a publicist. Get net savy and get up to date with the times.

SNARK - BTW I thought you might get a kick out of this. I just saw the movie Miss Congeniality on DVD. In one of the scenes that was deleted, Josie Davis (I believe - she played "Grace" on Y&R) was dethroned as Miss New Jersey. Mind you, the scene got cut from the movie so you didn't see her on the big screen but hey, it's a start. And it's a good thing when I see a soap star get a part in a movie even if it's a bit part. Melinda Kankaredes did a lot of bit parts in big screen movies before getting "Providence". Anyone rememeber in that curtesan movie?

SPICY!! I loved your top ten this week! It was brilliant and dead on balls accurate. Kathie Lee Gifford the host? Whose brilliant choice was that. Sad to say but Kathie as hostess didn't make much sense at all and neither did Nancy O'Dell all though I have to admit Mr. Dim though Nancy was easy on the eyes.

As for Scheffer his 4 months of writing material outshined a year's worth of the competetion. It's sharp, witty, and doesn't insult my intelligence. Scheffer deserved the recogination.

As for Hensely & Eplin, there's always next year. IMHO, Eplin is the better actor and deserved the nomination but he didn't deserve the award. BUT and this means the most - The fact he got a nomination means that HIS industry and genre have FINALLY recoginzed that fact that he's a very good actor. Hang in there Eplin. If Susan Lucci can win the Emmy so can you. As for Outstanding Supporting Actress, I was crossing my fingers for Maura West but when I saw Lesli Kay's clip I knew she was going to take the award. Why? Because it was that good.

Looking forward to your next columns guys! keep it up! You rock!

Love & Ciggies
Dim
