Jackpot in Atlantic City: Nora and Kuh
(Nora Aunor & Kuh Ledesma - Atlantic City)
Filipino audiences have the chance of hitting two jackpots with one getaway trip on June 11, a Friday, by taking time out to fabled Atlantic City to enjoy all the attractions the city is famous for and to watch superstars Nora and Kuh in the “Power of 2.”
The concert, part of a series of special events lined up by the New York-based Special Editions Press this year, will be held at 9 in the evening at the Boardwalk Hall, beside the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino.
For long-time fans of the enduring artistry of Ms. Aunor and Ms. Ledesma, the concert offers a rare opportunity to get together in a popular venue known for both recreation and excitement.
For her fans, Ms. Aunor will always be the petite, brown-skinned Bicolana who won the plum prize in Tawag ng Tanghalan, or Call of the Stage, which antedates the currently very popular American Idol contest by 30 years.
“I’m glad Nora is back,” says Edith Corpuz, 40, a resident of Parsippany, NJ, and an Aunor loyalist. “It will be a very special occasion for me to see her again in a concert.”
For Sylvia Garcia, 69, a day-case teacher in Jersey City, Ms. Aunor is the original and the only superstar. Behind the magic of Nora’s golden voice is the goodness of her heart, Garcia explains. “Marami siyang natulungan.”
For young Fil-American professional Leonel Escota, it is a case of a life-long taste acquired very early. “I would stop crying only when my nanny, an Aunor fan, played her music. Escota is the developer and manager of the well-known Aunor online fan club ICON, or the International Circle of Online Noranians.
In turn, Ms. Ledesma, considered one of the Philippines’ finest singers, earned the title of “Asia’ Princess of Pop.” She has performed in more than 300 hit concerts in the Philippines and abroad in a stellar 25-year career.
“Kuh’s got a wonderful voice and her songs really touch me,” says Amy Corpuz, 48, a teacher in New York. Her favorite Kuh songs are “Dito ba? and “A Long Time Ago.”
For the producers, this will not be the first time Special Editions has presented the two superstars to tri-state audiences. Kuh Ledesma Live Concert with A.D.O.B.O. was the company’s first hit concert back in 1994. The Nora Aunor Live Concert, held at the Newark Symphony Hall in New Jersey, was a similar blockbuster in 2000.
This is why organizers are banking on the drawing power of both entertainers to make this summer’s concert even more successful, hence the show title “The Power of Two.” Ms. Ledesma and Ms. Aunor will also be performing in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, and Atlanta.
“Somehow, the unique voices and the excellent choice of songs of Nora and Kuh have the power to reach out and touch the very hearts of Filipino audiences,” says Mila Mendez, Special Editions vice president.
