Last weekend for ‘Kuh Ledesma presents Mitch Valdes
A silver anniversary is often celebrated with grandeur, marked with all sorts of trimmings and splendor that highlight the honoree’s achievements. This is especially true for someone who has dedicated her life to offering the best in music and performance to her discriminating audience. And side-by-side with her rise to success is her conscious effort to open doors to young talents who deserve a place in the industry.
For the past 25 years Ms. Kuh Ledesma has worked non-stop on her craft, mounting concept concerts both here and abroad as well as recording quality songs. Recently she has become busier with a weekly stint at the weekly Sunday show "ASAP," the operations of Hacienda Isabela in Cavite, and her regular prayer meetings and Bible study with the other members of Christ’s Commission Fellowship.
"When I look back, I realized that I am really busier now. What’s nice about it is that I do not feel tired, unlike in the past. Like television work is not easy, but you know what, I enjoy it. I really like the energy and the pace. When I pray I always tell the Lord that I am willing to do more, and so that’s probably why he provides me with more work," she said.
For this performer, the celebration of one’s silver anniversary is truly a blessing from God. "Imagine having to last this long, in this kind of business. I really feel blessed, what more can I ask?"
And while it is but typical to mark the affair with a grand concert, Ms. Ledesma prefers not only to perform but to produce concerts that feature equally talented artists. Kuh opened the series with a homecoming Valentine concert at Captain’s Bar billed "The Love Songs of Streisand, Le Grand and Groban." This was followed by exciting weekend shows with different themes and concepts, like the "Acoustic Series," "Songs That Made The Movies" and for the whole month of July "Mitch Valdez in Rocking Comedy."
The series is a take-off from "Kuh Ledesma Presents... " series that started at Music Museum years ago, this time however the shows will be at the Captain’s Bar. The celebration will not only focus on Ms. Ledesma music, but on the talents of other artists. Her Valentine show for instance also featured Christian Bautista and For Song From the Movies, the diva was joined by newcomer Rebekah, Jake Macapagal, Topper Fabregas and Lana Jalosjos.
Now on its final weekend is Mitch Valdes in "Rocking Comedy" at the Captain’s Bar. Tired of the current political upheaval in Philippine government? Mitch Valdes can surely help you forget all about it. The jampacked one–woman act at the Captain’s Bar of the Mandarin Oriental delves into the uniqueness of the Filipina, spiced with humor and hilarious punch lines.
Drive down memory lane as Mitch traces back the glorious days of the ‘70s where she was active theater performer. Her rendition of the Broadway hit "I Don’t Know How to Love Him" from the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar," brings back so much memories of the era, including the reign of the popular rock band Juan dela Cruz which gave rise to the careers of rock legends Mike Hanopol, Joey "Pepe" Smith and many more.
Another fine performance is her rendition of the 70s hit "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" complete with the love story behind the Clint Eastwood starrer topped with her funny analogy on how that particular romantic scene changed the outlook of the female race.
Not to be outdone is the comedienne’s take on the funny side of womanhood, from the thrills of dating, the gym addiction all the way to mammography torture. It’s a night of good music and healthy laughter that uplifts the soul.
No political issues. For a change the show will not make fun of politicians and celebrities. The show is all about Mitch, funny episodes in her life that help mold her as a fine artist.
Ms. Kuh Ledesma has been known for giving other performers a chance to shine. Back in the ‘80s she was the first artist to guest a talented La Sallite named Gary Valenciano, in the early 90s she also produced the Valentine show of Regine Velasquez entitled "Regine at 17" followed by a New Year concert which featured young singer Lilet and Carlo Orosa. Indeed what better way to cap one’s 25–year achievement than to open doors for other artists.
For the next few years, the concert diva will still focus on the pursuit of artistic excellence along with her journey for a deeper relationship with her creator. "Focusing on life keeps me going. I want to work more because I also want to help more people. My ultimate dream is to be a minister, to help others by preaching the word of God."
After a hard day’s work the singer goes off to Hacienda Isabela her four hectare property in Cavite. Aside from her private dwelling, the hacienda also has cottages for rent where people can rest and meditate.
Mitch Valdez "Rocking Comedy" goes on its final weekend today, July 22 and 23. This will be followed by "Diva 2 Diva: Up Close with Ms. Kuh Ledesma and Ms. Zsa Zsa Padilla which opens on Aug. 5.
