LINK" on 19:27:15 01/06/05 Thu Generally, Lake Superior will freeze completely once every 20 years or so. 1962, 1979, and 2003 are the last 3 years that happened. It came very close to freezing over in 1996, 1994, and 1972. Last year was weird. We had a warm December then the jet stream dipped way south and we got blasted the rest of the winter. However, Superior only froze to the ‘normal’ extent or a tad less. Am I goin’? What we’re doing. The first time I heard about this I figured it was an ice floe kayak trip. Now I gather it’s some sort of masochistic backpacking trip from Copper Harbor to Isle Royale. If I’m not scheduled to be hiking the NaPali or Yurt-hopping the Rockies I’m probably in.
