Remember how our Commanding Expedition Leader retired last fall and threw down the gauntlet for us to fill in the gap? I think this means it’s up to US to make some trips happen this summer. I’m game to lead a big open water kayak trip and maybe some small outtings, but I need some input on a destination. Let me know what you think of these ideas, 3 “big trip” ideas and 2 “small trip” ideas. Let me know of some others if I missed a good one.

Bass Islands – Ohio to Canada and back. I have an excellent 4.5 day 55 mile route picked out with lots of side trips for more advanced paddlers. There is also a lot of freedom to alter the route depending on weather and group ambitions. This would take us to most of the Bass Islands, have a lot of open water crossings, and involve an international border crossing. There are also the stupidest smallies and walleye in the world in these waters. Camping may be less “rustic” than other FBET trips (read: tent campgrounds most nights). It’s a warm water paddle, so screw wearing a wetsuit.

Drummond Island Circumnavigation – Something like a 50-70 mile paddle depending on the route. Camping is *really* rustic. Route is inflexible, other than choosing the direction of travel around the island and how many outer islands we want to visit. There are some magnificent cliffs on the east side of the island (100+ ft). We could also do a weekend trip here and play around on the (mostly private land) islands on the sheltered north side. This is pretty cold water.

Cockburn Island – actually not named after a tragic camp stove accident, this island is directly to the east of Drummond on the Canadian side of the border. It’s smaller, has less significant cliffs and is considered to be a less exciting trip than Drummond by those who have paddled both. But there is the allure of getting remote entry permits from Canada to visit the island. About a 30-40 mile trip. This is pretty cold water.

Power Island in the west arm of Grand Traverse Bay (Small Trip Idea). We’d need to get camping reservations now, but this could make a great tune-up trip for the big kayak outings. Lots of semi-stupid, very tasty fish here. A fairly cold water paddle.

St. Clair River Delta (small trip idea). There are allegedly some decent remote areas to paddle here. A possible tune-up trip.
