Chapter 260

The intense dislike between Andy Koo and Samuel Li went back a long time. Both men were about the same age and had had similar career paths, the only exception being that they belonged to different triads. Both had the outward appearance of being successful businessmen in the mainstream but their legitimate corporate affairs were a cover for their respective triads. Keeping his connections with the Rising Dragons a secret was better for business and Andy Koo was all for the business of making money. Samuel also knew of his nemesis’ other role within the triad. Since the death of Tony Wong, Andy was the one who could take care of any messy aspects of triad life for Sun Yee Lok. If pressure needed to be put on a dissident, if someone needed to be rubbed out or roughed up, he was called upon and that was why Samuel was suspicious of what happened at his nightspot in Hong Kong.

In this particular instance, lies had been fabricated about the Black Panthers involvement. Hence the animosity between the two of them had escalated with the bloodbath killings at Andy Koo’s nightclub “The Triangle.” They were not seeking any revenge as the Rising Dragons had insinuated. They had not encroached on their turf... they were not responsible for the mayhem. This confrontation had been seen as payback for blaming the Black Panthers for the car bombing incident at the park … however, Samuel’s triad was innocent; they’d had nothing to do with the killings. Samuel had even put his own men on the case but they had been unable to shed light on the carnage. Obviously it was the random act of crazed people or perhaps any repercussions were actually on the Rising Dragons itself. Sun Yee Lok’s directive could have been that blame was to be focused on the Black Panthers’ triad to divert suspicion from an inside job.

Unfortunate as it was for Andy Koo and his business, the murders on the dance floor were certainly not the work of the Black Panthers. Nevertheless he was hell bent on accusing his triad of the bloodshed. Despite any rivalry between the two, prior to his accusations, Samuel had no desire to ruin Andy Koo’s business or kill him regardless of their utter dislike … but that had all changed now. If some kind of “accident” was to happen to him in the future or if he was to disappear, then he would have no qualms about Andy’s demise. What Samuel Li didn’t have any knowledge of … he could not be held responsible for.

Something else that bothered him was Sun Yee Lok’s role in the instigation of trying to pinpoint blame specifically on him as payback for his father’s death. He questioned his motives in trying to turn the tables on the Black Panthers. His beef had been with his father and if any blame was to be laid it was at the feet of the Rising Dragons’ leader. Sun Yee Lok was aware that his father had wanted control in Hong Kong for some time now and knew that he would have contested an election had he not died. It was highly suspicious in Samuel’s eyes and if he thought he could get away with it then he had another thing coming. The death of his father had changed everything. Loss of honour was a serious matter. Samuel needed to prove that the Riding Dragons were their own worst enemies and that Sun Yee Lok was no longer fit to be the Dragon Head. Two could play this game and he had the “balls” to take him on.

Sun Yee Lok would pay the piper for underestimating him. He was a triad’s leader’s son … a son who was hell bent on fulfilling his father’s dictates in a power struggle with the Rising Dragons at all costs, one where the winner takes all.

Samuel Li had much on the agenda today for this meeting but he would be steadfast in his execution of it. Armed with the relevant and convincing facts about the Rising Dragons would make his case for election a compelling one. Hence the first issue for discussion would be to talk about the vulnerability of the Rising Dragons under Sun Yee Lok’s leadership. Since his return from America for his father’s funeral, there seemed to have been one catastrophe after another and turmoil plaguing the Rising Dragons. More than one thing would be manageable but multiple disasters could be catastrophic unless Sun Yee Lok had the resolve, money and the manpower to offset such misfortune. Striking at the heart of the tiger before it could show its claws was his way of payback. He was not a forgiving man and the fact that Sun Yee Lok had tried to blame the Black Panthers for all the woe, death and disappearance of members of the Rising Dragons’ triad and all other problems that had befallen his triad was reprehensible.

He needed to sow the seed of doubt in the other triad hierarchy as to his ability to run the Rising Dragons let alone all the other eight groups in Hong Kong.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

They needed to strike now … while the triad was at its lowest ebb … if they wanted to prevent the Rising Dragons trying to reassert their influence before any rival triads had time to challenge them. Therefore they needed to be proactive and make the first move before Sun Yee Lok and the Rising Dragons had a chance to reaffirm its dominance in Hong Kong and beyond once more. This would require level headedness and cunning. Sun Yee Lok was a ruthless and autocratic leader, and he would not go easily if they were indeed able to overthrow and usurp his power. If the Rising Dragons was the one to triumph over all the other factions there could very well be blood on the streets in their attempt for supremacy and dominance. What the factions needed was a bloodless coup. This was a time for survival of the fittest. The last thing that Sun Yee Lok would want or need was a protracted turf war with the combined might of the Black Panthers or the 14K's. But if it came to that … then so be it … to the victor went the spoils and Samuel had no intention of his triad being defeated.

As chairman of the meeting, Samuel would make it clear in no uncertain terms that he would tolerate no dissidents at the gathering. They were there for one purpose and one purpose only to oppose the re-election of Sun Yee Lok as Dragon Head and to end the monopoly of the Rising Dragons once and for all. Samuel would let the other triad members know that he meant business and that he was the only one who could pull off such a coup against Sun Yee Lok. He needed to convince them of this fact in order to have solidarity. Sun Yee Lok had divided Hong Kong up into geographic areas and ethnic groups that each of the eight main triad groups was responsible for controlling. Hence, the aims and objectives of the coup were clear cut. As the new elected head he would pledge to be more magnanimous in his decisions and share the spoils more equitably amongst the other triad groups. He’d vow to also be a benevolent and inclusive chairperson that listened to what the other triads had to offer. Keeping your friends close and your enemies closer would be his mantra and by promising to give more to each triad he would consolidate his candidateship for the supreme head. Being more democratic … not autocratic … would certainly be the deal breaker. If the other triad leaders knew that they would get a bigger slice of the pie then this would be a win–win situation for everybody. This would be his radical winning move… if he could convince enough of the members gathered he would have the numbers to seek the top position.

His wife Maggie wanted him to go down the straight and narrow path of respectability … but that was impossible. He was the good son who’d returned to Hong Kong to accept the mantle of leadership of the Black Panthers. Since returning to his homeland, however, Samuel had changed from the calm and self-control man he once was. He was now obsessed with revenge for his father’s honour. In gaining power over the other triad groups, he could achieve his aim of destroying the Rising Dragons for their skulduggery, slander, innuendo and monopoly here in Hong Kong. He would bring Sun Yee Lok to his knees for suggesting that the Black Panthers were responsible for their woes. In order to perpetuate his father’s legacy and to atone for the ills done to the triad by Sun Yee Lok this is what he had to do. After today, Samuel knew there would be no turning back; he would only sink deeper and deeper into the world of the triad. This was to be his new way of life as the head of his triad … it was all too real and the only real choice he had was to challenge the monopoly of Sun Yee Lok. He intended to be victorious … there were no other options. There were no prizes for second place and besides he would lose face in front of the other triads … something that wasn’t worth contemplating if he were to fail. Whoever managed to survive would be the victor and for the other, the future would end in tragedy.

Samuel had done his homework and knew that he needed to reconfirm the value of brotherhood and comradeship in their underworld. He needed to re-establish a sense of deep-rooted law and order among the triad societies because with the demise of one triad came the rise of another and he intended for it to be the Black Panthers. He needed to strike while the iron was hot or else Big D (Donnie Yew) from the 14K’s or Johnnie Tao from the Red Lantern triad would surely make a move if he didn’t.

For Samuel Li it was now or never. It was time to make a pre-emptive strike at the very heart of the Rising Dragons. He could do it alone but with all the triads together … he would be invincible.
