She feels closest to him first thing in the morning, in the hazy time before the alarm clock goes off and her life starts ticking away.

Days and nights are theoretical constructions half the time in Section, a product of the artificial light and ventilation that life underground requires. But she still thinks that she wakes in the morning, when the sun is making an appearance, and goes to sleep at night when the moon is in the sky.

And she likes to think that he is there too, out in the world, getting up in the morning and drinking his coffee, taking Adam to school and working some job. Making dinner and reading the paper and checking his son�s homework. Locking the doors last thing at night, before he goes to bed.

She doesn�t like to think about what else he might be doing at night.

But first thing in the morning she can imagine that he�s there with her, that he�s just gotten up before her and is taking his shower, that he�s still a part of her life down there, under the ground.
