Chapter 8 – Part II

Nikita sat back down, just the sternness of Michael’s voice, the coldness of his eyes sent a chill right down her spine.

“We have put you in great danger by telling you what we have. But I have been sent on a mission to Marcali Industries. My cover is an investment consultant and I am there to assess and guide their financial situation. My real reason for being there is that Marcali Industries is used as a cover and a fund source for global terrorists. Nikolai Marcali is a dangerous man and he must be stopped.”

Nikita was quiet now and listening as Michael continued, “I know that Wolfe Enterprises is interested in a takeover of Marcali and you have been positioned to the point person Nikita.”

Walter interjected, “My sources tell me that someone in the Organization has set this up for you and Michael to meet again.”

“Why would anyone do that? Why would they care?” Nikita asked.

Michael continued to keep his distance from Nikita, as much as he wanted to be as close as possible she was frightened of him now – and she was better off that way. “These people have resources and methods that you can’t imagine. They change configurations on a global scale every day. They have plans we can’t begin to imagine.”

Nikita glared at Walter, “He’s serious isn’t he?”

Walter took a deep breath and looked at Mick, “This old man could use a cup of coffee, you know if there’s any in the kitchen?”

Mick, like being pulled out of a daze replied as he moved into the kitchen, “Oh, yeah. Coffee. I’ll make coffee.”

Walter continued, “Yes, Michael is serious. Sugar, the people that we work for set up scenarios like this every day. Power and manipulation is all that they do. Trust me, Marcali is dangerous, and if you couple the assets and power of Wolfe Enterprises with the treachery of Marcali there is the makings of a nightmare situation.”

“They put Michael in place because they know that he will make sure that a mission is successful no matter what he has to do. I’m sure they also saw your potential Sugar, with the last merger that you put together. I’ve got a couple other ideas but they are still cooking for right now.”

“So what do we do now? Do I just talk with Grey and let him know what is going on and convince him that we drop the Marcali deal?”

“No,” Michael cringed when he heard his own tone of voice as he said the word too quickly and too sharply. He could tell by her face that he had scared her again, and he was very tired of scaring her. He tried again, “What I mean is, if this deal suddenly falls apart then Section will realize that something is going on. They can’t know that we are on to something.”

“Do you think that Grey is a part of this?”

Michael hated the way she used the other man’s first man. His jealousy was completely uncalled for and he knew it. She was not seeing the other man romantically but he hated how much time she had been spending with him. And he knew that she respected Grey and his abilities. But at this moment, as she looked at him with fear and hurt and distrust in her eyes it just tore at the very center of his being. She had every right to feel the way she did, he didn’t deserve anything better.

“No. I’ve reviewed Grey’s files and I can’t find any connection to Marcali or any of the groups that he supports.”

Nikita seemed to relax a little at that statement. She looked at Michael with almost gratefulness in her look, “Thank you.”

Michael said nothing, he didn’t deserve her thanks.

From the kitchen came, “Hey, either of you spy-guys take crème or sugar in your coffee?”

Walter grinned, “No we spy-types take it black and in big mugs not any girly cups with flowers on the side.”

Mick brought the coffee in, “Ok so I’ve been listening to this tale and something tells me that Nikita is being set up here. If the deal goes through it’s a disaster, if the deal doesn’t go through then it looks like she doesn’t know what she is doing and should never be head honcho at Wolfe. Am I getting this right?”

“Great, so I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t?”

“No.” Michael said softly. “We don’t have enough intel yet to ascertain your specific role in this scenario.”

“So what do I do?”

“You continue doing your job just as you’ve been doing it. You tell no one about this meeting or anything that’s been said in this room. Attempt to delay any meetings and proceedings with Marcali as long as you possibly can. That will give Walter and I more time to figure out the planned end game.”

“You want me to act normal? Just go about my day like nothing ever happened?”

Yes, we do. Both you and Mick.” Walter told them.

“Well no problem for me love. I don’t understand, and I don’t want to, half of what’s been said here this morning. As far as I am concerned no one was ever here. Business as usual for Mick here. Now we do need an excuse for you being late this morning. But seeing as how you were still working after 2:00 this morning when I picked you up I don’t think there will be any exceptions to you coming in late. I’m just going to call the office and let them know….” As Mick went to pick up the phone he hesitated and looked at Michael before his hand touched it, “Is it all right this time if I use the phone?”

“Yes. But you can tell no one that we were here.”

“Oh, me, tell anyone? No way. No Mick. Mum is the word from me.”

Michael had listened to Mick and he looked at Nikita and just how tired she really did look. “I know that this has been upsetting. You don’t have to go in today. Maybe you should stay home, rest…?”

But Nikita would have none of that, “Oh no. No you don’t Mr. Michael Samuelle. Don’t you come in my home and start telling me what I will and won’t do. You lost that privilege ages ago. I listened to you once, trusted you once, completely. Don’t think that will ever happen again. You keep your opinions about anything personal with me to your self. We will figure out what is going on with this wicked Marcali deal, put an end to it, and you will quietly disappear once again and I will forget that I ever saw you again Is that clear?”

“There is a small detail that you haven’t thought of,” Walter quipped from his vantage point across the room.

“And what would that be?”

“Someone has to protect you Sugar. We don’t fully understand your role in this yet. Until we do you need to be shadowed, for your own good.”

“That’s ridiculous. I’m only ever at the office, where I’m perfectly safe or here. This is a secure building.”

Michael reminded her, “We got in.”

She rolled her eyes at that one. “Mick is with me all the time now. I can’t lose him if I tried.”

“And you wouldn’t try I’m sure love.” Mick kissed her cheek and told her, “I just talked to Mr. Wellman personally and he said to take all the time you need, you work too much anyway and I should probably take you shopping this morning anyway.”

“No shopping. Bu thanks Mick. I just need a shower and we are off to the office.”

“Well then gentlemen I had best get to my place and get cleaned up and presentable to the office. Mick needs to look his best. I know, I know, all hush-hush on the spy business stuff. Nikita I’ll be back in one hour with a car to take you in.” With that he was out the door.

Walter asked Michael, “Did you have him under surveillance?”

“Yes, tracker is in place.”

Nikita was appalled, “You are tracking Mick’s movements. Innocent Mick?”

“We are trying to keep him safe.”

“Safe. Is that what you call it Michael? Safe. Not invasion of privacy, illegal? Just safe.”

Instead of answering her question he reached inside his coat and pulled out a small PDA. “Nikita, I need you to keep this with you all the time. Every minute of every day. We can communicate this way, with no one knowing about it, from anywhere.” When she hesitated to take it from him he said simply, “Please?”

“Oh all right. But you two have to keep me up to date all the time on what is going on. I have to go to the office now. Please see yourselves out if you don’t mind.”

Before she could leave completely Michael made one last request, “Please be careful.”

He anger still spilled over in her reply, “Of what? You? Or the other bad guys?”
