Dreams in the Dark (284/?)
by Katherine Gilbert

The passionate letter which had made Nikita so happy was not the only one of Michael's which was delivered that day. Sometime after the general workday was over, Madeline discovered, to her mild surprise, that she was a recipient, as well. But her reaction was not quite as joyful as Nikita's had been.

There was a look of slight dismay on her coldly-beautiful face, as she glanced over the envelope, handling it nearly as though she expected it to contain some sort of dangerous animal. Still, when nothing untoward happened, she opened it cautiously. She was never a woman who put off the inevitable.

Still, she couldn't quite bring her mind to focus for half a second or so, was too amazed that the man would write to her. True, it might just be about the details of his upcoming visit--the premiere they were scheduling--but she doubted it. He was far more likely to leave such minutia to Volker, who seemed to be acting as little more than his servant, of late. Given some of her plans recently, unsuccessful though they might sadly have been, this seemed more likely to be some sort of threat; she almost smiled. It had been awhile. She rather missed the challenge.

It was with the anticipation of an interesting opponent that she looked the letter over; she wasn't disappointed. It read:

Madeline,

I'm well aware of your intentions toward my wife. Cease them now. Nikita, my marriage to her, and her pregnancy are none of your concern, but what happens to her *will* have an effect on your future. I suggest that you remember this fact, before you try anything else.

My wife is only yours part of the time. She'll do her job at the studio as professionally as always. But she is no business of yours beyond that.

I've heard of your latest shenanigans, and I've had enough of them. There will be no more "accidents" on set. They *will* end. If I return to find Nikita harmed in any way, it is *you* who will pay. There is nothing you will gain from any of your schemes.

Stop your harassment now. Even if something were to happen to Nikita, or to our child--which I assure you, you would suffer for--you will never have control over me. I assume that's your wish. You don't seem to be woman enough to simply want me in your bed.

I realize that your major objection to my relationship with Simone was that you had no control over it. Do not let the fact that I survived her death make you think that such a feat would be repeated with Nikita. If she dies, I'll follow her; you have no hold to keep me here. If this is your intention, and you would like me dead, act more directly. I assure you, I can defend myself.

I realize that you labor under far too many delusions and psychoses to fully understand anything but your own, erroneous fantasies. Still, let me attempt to tell you the truth. Nikita is *mine*. I am hers alone. The child is ours. Nothing you or anyone else on earth ever attempt will separate us. Even in death, I will follow her. No action of yours will change any of these facts.

I understand that you see everyone's motives but your own as childish--even though yours are far more juvenile than any others on the lot. Let me make myself clear. My love, passion, and devotion to Nikita will not end--whatever might happen to her. Even if she were harmed, nothing could break me from her. You may see this devotion as childish, if you please. You are not a deep or complete enough person to understand love.

There is no more to say than this. Nikita is mine. I will not see any harm come to her. Anything you do will be returned to you a thousandfold. Do not delude yourself so far as to believe that I will not have my full revenge.

Leave her be,

Michael

There was a smile on Madeline's face, as she finished the missive, his threats exactly those she had hoped. She was only surprised by his boldness, by how open he had been; he clearly thought this more important than the eyebrows it might raise in anyone who could read it. That only made her plans better. Despite his foolish intentions, the game was now much more interesting. An easy win over him, as he ignored his wife's suffering, would be too simple. *Now*, she had an enemy she could enjoy.
