Chapter 11

The next morning at exactly 7:30, Walter knocked on the door. Even though they had had little sleep the previous night, Michael and Nikita were already awake and eating breakfast.

“Mornin’ Sugar,” Walter said, accepting a cup of coffee from her.

Nikita kissed his cheek. “Does your head hurt?” she asked.

“Nah,” Walter replied. “Slept it off. Davenport’s coming at eight?” he asked, turning to Michael.

Michael nodded.

“I’m nervous,” Nikita admitted.

Walter patted her arm. “Don’t worry. As much of a … prick as Davenport is, he is still one of the good guys.”

She nodded, her nervousness abating somewhat.

They didn’t talk much while Walter accepted some of the eggs and toast that Nikita had made for breakfast. Nikita’s plate was virtually untouched. She had called her office earlier and told them she wasn’t feeling well. Susan, the receptionist, had told her to get better, and that she would let Mr. Wolfe know.

Nikita was deep in thought and jumped when the doorbell rang. Michael rose to let Davenport in.

Nikita craned her neck to see down the hall and get her first glimpse of this CIA man she would have to talk to. He trailed behind Michael, but she could see him well.

Agent Davenport was a tall, bald, black man with a goatee. He was very solidly built, but wore a good fitting suit to hide his thickly muscled arms and shoulders. He took off his dark glasses and glanced at her. She got the feeling she was under inspection in a microscope.

“Do you want anything to eat?” Michael offered. Davenport declined.

“I’ve talked to my superiors about this threat, and they’ve granted it a top priority. Let’s get down to business,” he said, glancing from Michael to Walter.

“Ok,” Michael replied, picking up the hard drive and motioning to Nikita.

They moved to the living room and sat down. Michael handed the hard drive to Davenport and began to fill him in on the details of how they had been hired. She noticed that he gave a slightly different version of how they had ended up getting access to her computer.

After the briefing by Michael, Davenport took over and asked Nikita questions. She answered with as much detail as she could, which wasn’t much. She realized that she hardly knew anything about what went on at Section One.

“I’m sorry that I don’t know more. But I really don’t go into the office very often. A lot of my work I do from home,” she apologized.

Davenport seemed very taken with Nikita. His questions, which at first were brusque and business-like, were more gentle as the conversation continued. Michael noticed the change right away.

He glanced over at Walter, who was smirking. He had noticed too. Everyone seemed to fall under Nikita’s charm.

“Don’t worry, Miss Wirth. Just leave everything up to us,” Davenport assured her.

“So what is the plan for Wednesday?” Walter asked. “When do we move?”

“You don’t move at all,” Davenport said, his brusque manner returning. “The agency will handle it.”

Michael could see Walter about to make a comment, so he put a hand up to forestall him.

“And what about Nikita?” Michael asked.

“I’ll let her know. We may need her as part of the mission. Once I have it profiled, I’ll be in contact,” he said turning to Nikita.

She nodded.

“I don’t want Nikita used in the mission, Davenport,” Michael protested, but Nikita put a hand on his arm.

“I want to help however I can,” she said. “It’s my virus they’re using.”

Davenport nodded as if that was the correct answer and then stood, picking up the hard drive.

Michael walked him to the door and then shut it behind him.

“How long do we have to wait?” Nikita asked, once Michael had returned to the living room.

“The time frame is short. You will probably hear something by tonight,” Michael replied.

“I don’t like them using Nikita without letting us be involved,” Walter grumbled.

Michael noted with satisfaction, the sense of fatherly protectiveness that Walter had already developed for Nikita.

“Fill Birkoff in on the meeting,” Michael told him. “I have to get ready to go in and meet with Wolfe.”
