Chapter 12

“Congratulations Mr. Wolfe. Your system is the first one ever that Red Cell Security has not been able to access. I commend you on your security, and your employees and their trustworthiness,” Michael reported, laying it on thick.

“I had no doubts at all, Mr. Samuelle,” Wolfe replied, leaning back in his chair. “Yet, I’m still glad to hear it from an outside, objective source.”

“Of course,” Michael said. “Obviously, since your system needs no additional features, fine tuning, etc., only the base fee applies,” he told the other man, handing him the card with the wire information on it.

“Yes, I’ll take care of that this week,” Wolfe said dismissively.

Michael rose. The meeting was over. He hoped that he was able to hide his disgust from the man. He shook Wolfe’s hand, smiling slightly – maintaining professional civility. It was all in Davenport’s hands now. The thought did not entirely cheer him.

“Goodbye Mr. Wolfe. And, again, congratulations,” Michael said and then turned and stalked out of the office.

Once he had gone, Wolfe’s door opened again, and a dark haired woman entered and sat in front of Wolfe.

“What do you think, Madeline?” he asked, steepling his fingers.

“He’s lying,” she said in a quietly cultured voice. “My sources tell me that Nikita and Mr. Samuelle have been together all weekend.”

“Maybe he likes her and doesn’t want to use her for all of this,” he suggested, waving his hand around at his office.

“That is possible, but unlikely. What is most probable is that Michael Samuelle has seduced Nikita and gained access to our system. If that is the case, then at best, he knows about the virus…” she told him.

“But he is a computer guy,” Paul Wolfe interrupted. “He could search all through our system and not figure out what the virus is really for.”

“Then why would he say the system is secure?” she countered.

Wolfe’s eyebrows drew down as he considered her point. She continued as if he had not interrupted. “At worst, he knows everything and has informed the authorities.”

“No agency can work that fast, Madeline. We have at least a week,” he said calmly.

She nodded slightly, “However, I believe we should move up the demonstration to tomorrow.”

“That’s fine with me,” Wolfe said, gesturing with his hands. “The sooner we show the stuff to Bauer, the sooner he gets the money from the clients.”

Madeline again spoke, ignoring Wolfe’s comments. “And I think we should have Nikita come in. If Mr. Samuelle did get access from Nikita, then she has outlived her usefulness.”

Wolfe swallowed and nodded. He shivered slightly – partly from fear and partly from arousal. His cold partner could speak of death without even a drop of emotion, but she still could turn him on with a glance.

Nikita was waiting when Michael arrived from his meeting with Section One.

“So, how did it go?” she asked, breathless for information.

“Fine. No problems,” Michael said, playing off the lingering sense of unease that he still felt.

Nikita threw her arms around Michael and sighed. “I was so worried,” she said into his shoulder.

He patted her back, leaning his cheek against her hair. “It’s ok. After Wednesday, you don’t have to worry about it ever again.”

She nodded into his shoulder.

“Do you want to go get something to eat?” he asked, trying to change the subject and calm Nikita.

“Ok,” she answered, finally pulling back from him. “Where do you want to go?”

“Where ever you want,” Michael told her with a smile. “Your choice.”

Nikita smiled and tilted her head as she considered. “Do you mind a little drive down the coast?” she asked him, a devious gleam in her eyes.

Michael smiled, wondering what she was up to. “As long as its not Cabo,” he told her.

Nikita laughed out loud, and Michael was glad to see her spirit returning. “No,” she said shaking her head, “not that far. Just down to Newport. They have the best pizza at the Balboa Pier there.”

“Let’s go then,” he said, extending a hand to her.
