Chapter 14

The next morning, with Michael standing disapprovingly beside her, Nikita stood stock still as the lady from the CIA fitted her with a microphone and camera. Nikita listened intently as the lady explained how to use the devices.

“You don’t have to do anything to the camera; it will record whatever is in front of you. Keep that in mind. If you want us to see it, you will have to face it,” she told Nikita adjusting the little pin on Nikita’s top.

“The earpiece and microphone are both in this little dot behind your ear. They are very sensitive. If you whisper, we will pick it up,” she explained.

“Will someone else be able to hear it if you talk to me?” Nikita asked.

“No, the placement of the micro-dot sends the signals directly into the inner ear. If someone had their head pressed against yours, they might hear it – but what are the chances of that?” the woman asked.

Nikita looked at Michael who looked as if he were grinding his teeth.

The tech continued. “If you need information, the code word is ‘vacation’ – you can just use it in a sentence or whisper it to us. There is an agent monitoring and can give you any information you may need – including help in keeping your story straight as far as the demonstration tomorrow. Now, if you need immediate extraction, the code word is ‘headache’ – can you remember that?” the tech asked.

Nikita looked at Michael, and then nodded to the tech with a roll of her eyes. “I think I can manage,” she said.

“Great,” the tech said, snapping her case shut, missing Nikita’s sarcasm. “You’re all set.”

Michael opened the door to Nikita’s apartment and saw the agent out.

“I don’t…” he began, turning to face Nikita.

“I know, Michael,” she interrupted, holding up a hand. “But we’ve been through this a hundred times. I need to do this to somehow … make up for the virus I helped create,” she explained.

Michael sighed. He knew when to admit defeat. “I’m going to ask Davenport for the frequency you are on. I want to be in on the monitoring,” he told her.

“I would like that,” she said with a smile. “I can’t think of anyone else’s voice I’d rather have whispering in my ear.”

She wrapped her arms around Michael’s neck and nuzzled his ear.

“Don’t count on it,” Michael predicted seriously.

“Test, test… Nikita can you hear me?”

The voice in her ear made Nikita jump.

“There seems to be some problem with the camera, can you check it, please?” Davenport asked.

Nikita giggled and pulled back from Michael. The camera had been pressed tightly against his chest. She turned quickly away so that the CIA agent wouldn’t see what the problem had been.

“Is that better?” she asked, earning her a confused look from Michael.

She pointed to her ear and mouthed Davenport’s name. Michael nodded, his expression fierce again.

“Yes, we are double checking our monitors right now. Can you keep talking so we can fine tune the microphone? he asked.

“I guess,” Nikita said. “What should I say?”

“Whatever, just keep talking for a minute or two,” came the reply.

Nikita started into a rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Michael rolled his eyes.

“Ok, that’s fine. We’re all set here,” Davenport told her. “Just go to work like normal. Once you get there,…”

“I know, walk around the main area to confirm your schematics. If I can get into the lab, do it,” Nikita dutifully recited.

“Right. And remember, we will be in a van close to the Section One building, so there is nothing to be worried about,” he assured her.

“Okay,” she said.

“Davenport?” Michael said loudly. “I want to be in mobile while she’s in there.”

“He said no way,” Nikita relayed.

Michael moved to stand directly in front of her. “She doesn’t go unless I am there,” he threatened.

Nikita listened for a moment and then looked apologetic. “He says that you can be in on the raid tomorrow. There is no reason for you to be there distracting me today.”

Nikita watched as the muscles in Michael’s jaw ticked. She hoped he wasn’t doing permanent dental damage.

“It’ll be okay,” she assured, wishing he would be there, but not wanting him to worry.

Putting her hand over the pin, she leaned forward and kissed him passionately. Then she walked out the door quickly, not wanting to lose her nerve. Michael watched her go. As soon as the door shut behind her, his cell phone was out and dialing.

“Hi Nikita,” Susan said looking up from her computer as Nikita walked in.

“Hi Susan,” Nikita said tightly. She mentally told herself to relax.

“Are you feeling any better?” Susan asked with a sympathetic face.

“Not really, but …” Nikita shrugged.

“Just be yourself – go about your day, just like normal,” Davenport’s voice told her.

“Yeah, I know,” Susan commiserated with a smile. “Wolfe wants all the employees in the big conference room at 11 for some big meeting.”

“Ok,” Nikita said, heading for her little office.

Once there, Nikita set up her laptop and checked her messages, then remembering her “mission,” she stood up to head for the break room to get a soda. On the way back, she took the long way around and peeked into the lab. It was empty. Although she realized that she shouldn’t be surprised, it just shocked her to see the big room completely bare of everything they’d been working on for months.

She passed Madeline’s office, then Wolfe’s, and then the office that the Blatt’s shared.

“Anything else?” she muttered under her breath.

“Looks great. You can go back to your office and work until that meeting. I’m very interested to find out why he would call the employees in for a meeting. It must have something to do with the demonstration tomorrow,” Davenport told her.

Nikita nodded and then caught herself. She hurried back to her desk and checked her email.
