Michael and Walter stood behind Birkoff as he multi-tasked into two different systems. Michael had wanted him to find out what frequency Nikita was on so that he could monitor the mission today. And Walter wanted back into Section One’s computers to see if there was anything else they could find.
He was having more trouble with the CIA, than with Section One, and Michael alternated between pacing and threatening looks.
“I figured out where their van is parked,” he said hopefully.
“I want their feed, Birkoff,” Michael demanded.
Birkoff’s fingers flew back to the keyboard as Walter scrolled through a schematic on a different monitor.
Suddenly, the monitor went blank.
“Hey, what the hell?” Walter asked. “What did you do?”
“Nothing,” Birkoff squeaked. “I’m not even on that server right now.”
“Well get it back,” Walter demanded.
“Geez!” Birkoff complained, switching back to the other keyboard.
He entered a few keystrokes, stopped, then entered a few more, hitting the Enter button several times. He sat back confused for a moment, then checked the connections under the desk.
“What’s going on?” Walter asked, noticing Birkoff’s strange behavior.
Without looking up, Birkoff answered. “According to this, we are still connected to Section One.”
“So what’s the problem, Birkoff?” Michael asked quietly, his sense of unease growing.
“Their system is …,” he typed some different keystrokes, referring to a notebook by his keyboard.
“What?” Walter growled.
“The site is wiped clean,” he said confused. “Everything, all the data, the webpages, everything. It’s all gone.”
Walter looked at Michael in alarm. “Their covering their tracks,” he said.
“They wouldn’t do that until they were ready for the demonstration. The people in the company would notice,” Michael said. He looked at his watch. It was 10:45.
“What if they moved up the timetable to today?” Walter said, giving voice to the concern that Michael had also realized.
“We have to get to Davenport! Birkoff, where is the van?” Michael shouted.
Birkoff swiveled back to the other monitor and brought up a digital map of Los Angeles.
“It’s right there. Here is the Section One building; the van is there,” he said pointing at the screen.
Michael ran from the room with Walter on his heels.
