Just Cake

Michael opened the door to his loft and stepped inside, happy to escape the mid-January chill. There was a fire blazing in the hearth, and his nose twitched at the scent of pot roast, wine, and something else. Something spicy.

She emerged from his kitchen, eyes sparkling in the reflection of the candles on a huge cake she carried to the dining room table.

The food smelled wonderful, and the table looked lovely. But why?

“What’s all this for?” Michael asked, half-smiling; bemused.

Nikita set the cake on the table, careful not to tip it and spill wax on the cream cheese icing. She knew Michael wasn’t as fond of sweets as she was, so she’d sacrificed and made him a carrot cake.

“You won’t tell me when your birthday is, but I saw something today that…well, I wasn’t supposed to see. I know it’s your anniversary with Section. Ten whole years today. Congratulations!”

Michael wasn’t smiling as he lifted a hand to Nikita’s face, dabbing at a smear of cinnamon on her nose.

“October,” he said softly. “October 30th.”

He turned away and trod the steps to his bedroom to change and take a shower, and Nikita blew out and removed the 10 candles from Michael’s cake one by one.
