Michael then unburdened further changing the conversation to the matter at hand and telling Nikita, “I believe Adam interfered with the process Vacek set in motion.”

Nikita asked as they spooned again, while communicating like an old married couple, “How?”

Michael answered matter-of-factly, “By just being born.”

Nikita noted, “Jones did say Adam's presence hindered Elena’s father and his ability to concentrate on Red Cell’s end game.”

Michael was filling in the blanks, “World dominance.”

Nikita looking towards Adam asked, “So the child prevented further catastrophe by setting back the timeline?”

Michael shook his head and concluded, “No, the path to oblivion began long before Adam was even born.”

She questioned softly, “And my faddah, what role does he play?

As usual Michael answered a question with a question, even one he had asked before, “Do you think Jones is your father?”

“No. Of course not, no one ever gave me reason to believe there was another father out there somewhere.” Then Nikita asked confused, “And your parents?

Michael sighed, “Command is a powerful reason.” Then paused and followed with, “If I am the only heir, then somehow my father would be in command.”

“I understand. If you disappeared, even if Paul was not chosen to rule, he would be in charge because Adam is not your son and thus not an heir, so no one would be left to rule but him.”

Michael almost smiled and continued, “Even if I am around, after all he is the King of our realm, he would think that I would succumb to his authority no matter what command I was granted.”

She continued, “Well then Michael, let’s wake Adam, ask him, he seems to know the answers.”

Michael finally broke out in a smile and kissed her face, furthering, “I don’t think that is the real Adam.”

Nikita was stunned by his observation, “What?”

“At least, not the Adam that I knew.”

Nikita thought out loud, “If Adam interfered with the process as Jones said, then why keep him alive?” She paused looked at the boy who slept close by and then at Michael, “You hugged him on purpose didn’t you? Royalty is not allowed public displays of affection…” Nikita whispered, “What do all those remarks he is making mean? That sarcasm is so out of character for a child his age - he doesn’t even look 7.”

Michael arranged Nikita in his arms for he was also tired. He kissed her good night as she whispered, “If this is not Adam, then who is he?”

------

Michael woke up to the sound of a child and female laughter, soft whispering and bonding. Nikita sat on the carpeted floor with the little boy chatting amicably and enjoying a game of jacks. Michael watched from the bed, quietly taking in his lover’s exquisite face misshapen with the sheer joy of enjoying the boy in a moment of normalcy. He moved stealthily to their side as the boy bounced the red rubber ball and picked up pairs of silver colored metal ‘X’s with dexterity and speed.

“Morning,” Michael greeted, stroking Nikita’s platinum hair as he bent to join them on the floor.

“Morning,” the boy responded mockingly smiling and adding, “Your Highness.”

Michael turned to Nikita with a questioning gaze, as she added, “Michael this is Jerome, he is from Sector 4.” And then purposely pulling the conversation back to the ordinary, “Do you want something to eat, we were brought a food cart about an hour ago.”

“This is not Adam?” Michael asked purposely pretending to be surprised, although the child's face screamed with the resemblance to Adam.

The boy remarked, “Are you being naďve or clever? I can’t seem to be able to read you this morning, Sire.”

“Who are you?” Michael asked.

“Do you think this was easy for me? I was forced to impersonate your child. I am going to be 11 next month.” The boy went on, “Nikita promised to return me to my old self if I cooperated with you two.”

Michael asked starring at the child, “And Adam?”

Nikita answered, “He doesn’t know were Adam is.” She moved to serve Michael a cup of coffee and a croissant. “We have spoken at length already, he used to live in your ex-wife Elena's house.” Nikita was trying hard to relay the fact that she had the child’s confidence already and Michael should allow her to continue gaining his trust.

Michael observed the child who was no longer wearing the ‘Adam’ persona, and Jerome stated, “Those poor schmucks drove Chevrolets and shopped at Walmart, she used to say that day in and day out. The idea of slaughtering them for their own good turned her stomach, but she did it because it needed to be done.”

Michael asked abruptly, “Where is Elena.”

“She became contaminated, and needed to die.” The boy answered coldly, although inside he was not even able to utter the name of the only mother he had known without his heart being ripped apart. “Sallah Vacek had her killed, this he told me as he had my identity erased and turned me into Adam.”

“Fate used opportunity one more time." Nikita philosophized, Vacek tried to convince Jerome that Elena was his mother.” Nikita said butting into the conversation, “Vacek went insane when he realized Elena had disobeyed him by not only having someone other than you father Adam, but also allowing your parents to find out that truth.”

The child continued, “He said that you had eventually accepted Adam, but King Paul and Queen Madeline would never allow anyone other than a true blue blood to wear the crown.” Jerome looked into angry green eyes, “Yes, her father wanted you to be blamed for everything. He hated you that much for defiling his daughter. He wanted you blamed for killing thousands of innocent people and that is why he started the end of civilization.”

Nikita again trying to calm down the intensity she perceived from both men added, “Michael, it seems that Vacek, like Jones said, lost his grip on reality after Adam was born and found out the child was not yours. So, not able to have his heir be in lineage to the throne he started the carnage that even Red Cell was not planning.”

“I see.” Michael mumbled a bit disembodied.

Jerome spoke again, “I knew I was not her son, I am blonde for God’s sake.” He continued looking at Michael, “These people here, they are the remnants of Red Cell. They don’t want you to know who they really are; can you blame them? All they need is your help in rebuilding their realm, they already eradicated the Collective for you.”

Nikita said, “Yes we saw the coffins marked with the C’s when we came into this sector.”

The boy continued, “Their citizens are dying a slow death. But don’t you believe you really have command. It is all a veiled attempt at using you… I was hoping you understood my remarks yesterday.” And then whispering, “Chandler is Adam’s real father, he probably knows where Adam is, if the boy is still alive.”

Michael nodded understanding the gift the child had given him by telling him about Adam, so Michael mumbled, “Thanks”.

Nikita asked as the three sat still on the floor, taking in all the information the child was dispensing, “Will they let us go when we are finished here?”

Jerome looked at Michael, “Jones did say that there was no reason to dominate the world any longer.” The boy smiled an evil grin, “But then, can they be trusted?”
