I'm not sure how to classify this movie. It is about soldiers, but there is no combat, so it is not a war movie. Military drama, perhaps, though there are both humorous and romantic interludes. Nonetheless, it is definitely watchable.
Robert Newton has a fairly small, but still important, role as a soldier. Jealous of his flirtatious girlfriend, who is left at home in England. Constantly worrying that she might not wait for him, though she has promised to do so. Regulations say that he cannot get married until he turns 26, which is very upsetting to him.
I don't care very much for the type of character Robert Newton plays in this movie. Constantly seething; violence just below the surface. He is quite convincing; we really BELIEVE that he is about to explode. What I dislike is that this character is the wife-beater type.
***** SPOILER! *****
We join the 23rd Royal Lancers regiment on a troop ship at Gibraltar, last stop on the way home to England. They have been in India for 5 long years. Some, including the Colonel, have family along, others have left family and/or loved ones at home in England, but everyone is looking forward to finally getting home.
While still enroute to Southampton, the colonel receives new orders; the Lancers are to proceed to the Near East, after a stopover in Southampton of only 6 hours.
The Captain is due to leave the Regiment and join the war office, and he has a fiancee at home, but he wants to stay with the Regiment; he has fallen in love with the head nurse.
One of the troopers was planning to get married; he has the wedding ring and his prospective wife has her wedding dress all ready. The Colonel suggests that they get married as soon as he arrives in England and then she can join him on board.
The Colonel's wife is seriously ill, but she has kept it from her husband. When he finally finds out, he realizes that he will have to leave her behind and he may never see her again.
Jim (Robert Newton) gets a letter from his girlfriend that she will not be at the dock; if he wants to see her he has to go to the tobacconists shop where she works. He tries to get a pass, but is turned down. When he doesn't see her at the dock, he takes a taxi to the tobacconists shop, disregarding orders. Luckily, the Captain and his fiancee have followed him, because when his girl says she won't wait any longer for him, he turns violent and pulls a knife. The Captan's arrival stops the brewing violence, and the two make up.
Meanwhile, the Captain and his fiancee have a serious talk, and they realize that they have grown apart and both are in love with someone else.
The Colonel says goodbye to his beloved wife; everyone waves goodbye to those left behind, including Jim, whose girlfriend came to the dock to say goodbye after all, the Captain re-joins the regiment, and the troop ship is on it's way again.
