What I dislike is that this character is the wife-beater type.

***SPOILER AGAIN****

I thought exactly the same thing. What I found quite disturbing is that at first he appeared about to 'rape' his girlfriend. Then when she pushed him away he pulled a knife on her. That was when the Captain came in and stopped what was about to happen. Then I think it was about five minutes later that all four of them were walking out of the shop laughing and joking and kissing like nothing had happened. But no one seemed to take too seriously what had almost happened in there.
It looked like it was a case of attempted rape and attempted murder and they all just thought it was in the name of 'love'! I guess it was just a different way of thinking, huh?

***SPOILERS CONTINUED***

I agree too. I couldn't believe that his friend (Sebastian Shaw) and the friend's fiancee thought it was so romantic that he'd rather kill her than see her with another man. But then we're living in the post-O.J.-trial years. It wasn't so long ago that the Beatles had a hit with "Run for Your Life"! Ever listened to those lyrics? If O.J. was guilty, that could have been his theme song.
