This release, by Elstree Hill Entertainment, is more consistent, quality wise, than the Region 1 (Platinum) release, in spite of the large black border around the picture. Most of my Region 2 DVDs (which I can play only on my PC thanks to a download addition) yield larger snappys (screen captures) than the Region 1 ones, but by the time I have removed the black border, the resulting pic is just about the same size as the Patinum ones.

The color is not as vivid as most of the Platinum episodes, but some of the Platinum ones are oversaturated, and a few are extremely pale and washed out. The Elstree ones are pretty consistent throughout.

I don't care for the packaging, though. My volume 4 won't stay in place; I have to be pretty careful not to knock it loose, and by contrast, my volume 2 is extremely hard to get out. I'm seriously thinking about doing single cases for the 5 volumes.

BTW, the title is "Long John Silver", not "Adventures of Long John Silver", and the Elstree Hill version of LJS Returns to TI is ALSO named simply "Long John Silver". Pretty confusing, IMHO. It took me a while to find it on Amazon UK, and Play.com won't ship to the US.

While I am at it, the Elstree LJS Returns ALSO has the large black border, and the picture is jerky throughout. It may be my software, but all my OTHER Region 2 DVDs play just fine for me.

Amazon UK offers a deal if you buy both the series and the movie together, but the movie is not worth it, so skip it, and find a different release of 'Return' instead.

Forgot to mention: The Elstree episodes are also more consistent as to actual running time; each ep is between 26 and 26 1/2 minutes long, where some of the Platinum ones are a couple of minutes less, and the ending credits on one of the Platinum eps is from a different ep altogether.

I have not, YET, tried to run them at the same time, like I did with my versions of Jamaica Inn, but the running time tells a tale by itself.

Eva.

This link will demonstrate what I refer to as the 'black border' on the Elstree DVDs.

Hopefully it will work.
