Tonight on the Simpsons, Marge is pursued by an old flame ... When she rejects him and leaves his yacht, Captain McAllister (who just happens to be standing on the dock nearby) reassures him, "You'll get 'er back, Arty. I mean, 'Arrrr-ty.'"

Hi Susan!
You need to check out the cartoon "Spongebob Squarepants" on Nikelodeon, and especially the episode entitled, "Aaarggh" where Spongebob (our hero the sponge) and his buddy Patrick the starfish go treasure hunting with Mr. Crabs, who is an out-and-out tribute to Robert Newton. My favorite line: "Belay that skippin'...pirates don't skip!" and the ever popular "Pirates don't say 'okie dokie then'....pirates say 'Aaarggh!" Finally Mr. Crabs gets so fed up, he decides that only the Captain can say aargh. If I catch it again, I will make you a copy...it's that funny!

Hope all is well with you and yours!

Hey, Erin! Are you still aboard? I finally had time (and was home at the right time) to sit down and watch a few episodes of Spongebob this week. I saw Mr. Crabs last night. It was the episode where Spongebob quits his job at Mr. Crabs's diner and goes off to live among the jellyfish. He didn't have a lot of Great Lines like in the episode you described, but his accent and voice do owe a lot to RN!

Anyway, Spongebob Squarepants is my new favorite show! It's not only cute, but it's hilarious as well. Thanks for recommending it.

Erin, I caught the "Arrrgh" episode (in fact, I taped it). You're right, it's hilarious! I love the part where they run aground because Spongebob and Patrick are too busy trying to put "Arrrgh" between every word that they can't spit out the warning. And the Flying Dutchman character is an all-out Newton impersonation (but looks a lot like the *real* Blackbeard!). However, in other episodes, if Mr. Krabs is trying to sound like Robert Newton, he's not doing a very good job, IMHO. He has more of an Irish fisherman sound to him. He reminds me more of Robert Shaw as Captain Quint in Jaws! I love how a little jig plays in the background every time he talks.

The voice of Mr. Krabs is Clancy Brown, BTW, who had a pretty healthy on-screen career for a while there. He seems to be doing more and more cartoon voices lately. I'll always think of him as the bad guy from the first Highlander movie, but I also remember him from Blue Steel and Cast a Deadly Spell. Here's his official website: www.clancy-brown.com. Funny, does anyone else detect a bit of a "what's a website and what's this I'm recording?" tone to his audio greeting? You'd think an actor could make himself sound a little more enthusiastic! (He doesn't sound a *thing* like Mr. Krabs!)

There's also the Spongebob theme song, which is sung by a pirate using the "traditional" pirate cadence!

Sorry, I have no idea where you'd get a costume--if one even exists ... although, you could always just paint yourself red, get a pair of red boxing gloves ... but, hmm, stretching your eyeballs out over the top of your head might be a little difficult! ;-) But seriously, the topic of this message board is Robert Newton, so you might want to ask some more hardcore Spongebob experts in another forum! (Not that I'm not in imminent danger of becoming one myself!)

BTW, mateys, I've changed me mind: I think Mr. Krabs really is supposed to be Robert Newton after all ... His laugh gives it away: Ar-ar-ar-ar-ar-ar-ar-ar-ar! Besides Spongebob (who has a great laugh himself), Mr. Krabs is my favorite character. But why does everybody seem to think Long John's accent is Irish? Even Conan O'Brien (whose parents are from Ireland) is constantly saying that "all Irish people sound like pirates" on his "Late Night" show!
