Hello again,
The site appears to be working fine today, so it's all good!
I've watched two more Robert Newton films this week - "The Beachcomber" and "The Desert Rats." I loved Rob's performances in both, although I'd rather hoped he would've had more scenes in "The Desert Rats." (Although considering the film runs less than an hour and a half, I guess I shouldn't be too disappointed!) I was also interested to see a young Charles "Bud" Tingwell in the film. He's almost 80 years old now and he's an Aussie icon. He's often makes appearances on radio and TV. (He's done a series of commercials for one of the local radio stations, I heard one last night actually, hehehe).
As for "The Beachcomber," I loved the scene where Ted's sitting on the beach, contemplating the dinner invitation he received from Martha and her brother. "Will there be any booze?" I know it sounds ridiculous, but I must've wound back the tape and listened to that line at least five times! His facial expression and those eyes - it's absolutely priceless!!
Oh, I was quite excited when I read the TV guide this morning because I noticed that a film called "Poison Pen" is scheduled to screen on Sunday night (well, early Monday morning!) The title sounded familiar so I checked the imdb and was delighted to confirm that it is indeed a Robert Newton film! It was made in 1939 and also stars Flora Robson and Ann Todd. I haven't been able to find much information about it - has anyone seen it? - so I'm not sure how big RN's role is or what his character is like. But I'll definitely set my VCR and record it!
And Susan, if his family doesn't already have one in the works, I think you should definitely try your hand at penning a book on Robert Newton. Even if you do have to self-publish, I would definitely be one of the first to order a copy!
Cheers,
Michelle :)
