Speaking of Treasure Island in outer space ... Has anybody seen Treasure Planet yet? I saw it tonight. It was pretty good--great animation, great music, great cast, including Emma Thompson, Martin Short, Patrick McGoohan, and David Hyde Pierce. Brian Murray was a good LJS, but not much like Robert Newton really. The accent was straight Irish, and I didn't hear a single "arr." The character didn't look much like RN either, but he came closer to RN in terms of charisma than any other version of LJS I've seen. (I recently read part of an Orson Welles bio in which even his own biographer acknowledges Robert Newton's superior performance!)
Of course, no version can ever recapture the magic of the definitive 1950 version. Most of the main plot points were there, but, of course, everything was changed around and updated for today. It's a lot more sentimental, with a lot of scenes softened, following the current Disney cartoon formula that includes Aladdin, The Lion King, etc., pretty closely. I was especially disappointed not to hear *any* original dialog in this version. (Well, I did catch one "Jim lad" toward the end.) My favorite line (spoken by David Hyde Pierce): "Dang it, Jim, I'm a doctor, not an astronomer." Also, the name of the ship pays homage to the original author: the "R.L.S. Legacy."
Overall, I liked it, but it really made me long to see the *real* version again. In fact, I might just pop it in the machine right now! I'm curious what everyone else who's seen it thinks.
