The results of the TV Guide poll have been posted. Alas, only the top three write-ins were listed for each category, and, despite our efforts, Long John didn't make the list. But I'm sure he would have if we'd all known about the poll sooner! I mean, come on, we know that Robert Newton made Long John Silver a cultural icon! And how much do you suppose this summer's upcoming blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean is going to owe to his interpretation of the character? If it's anything like the theme-park ride, a whole lot! Meanwhile, what lasting impact have Hans Gruber from Die Hard or Annie Wilkes from Misery made on our culture?? (We shouldn't feel too bad though--Bela Lugosi's Dracula even didn't make the list.) Arr! Cap'n Langridge, if there be any cut 'n' rip, count me amongst yer crew! ;-)

I was kind of encouraged, though, that Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham came in second among the write-ins. The AFI may not recognize his brilliant villainy, but the public does! Let's just hope the experts at the AFI recognize Bobby tomorrow night.

BTW, it turns out that TV Guide's poll picks, although taken from the AFI's actual list of 400 candidates, are not necessarily those of the AFI. I ran out and bought a copy of the magazine last night, which makes it clear: "Did the Blob and McQueen make the final cut for AFI's 1000 Years...100 Heroes & Villains? Producers are as silent as creepy Michael Myers of Hallowe en," says the article. So the 100 choices in the poll are strictly those of TV Guide. Even TV Guide's cover is misleading though--it announces "100 Greatest Heroes and Villains" in big, bold type, but the only story about the awards is a small sidebar in a feature on Arnold Schwarzenegger!

So the good news is Bobby still may make the final list. I guess we'll just have to watch the show tomorrow night to find out.
