Hi Susan!
Glad to hear that you are well! Thanks for the info, and if you ever need help writing that book (hint, hint!) I would be happy to assist in any way. Here in L.A. you would think that some interesting stories would be floating around, but none so far. I have my ears open though. I try and frequent the memorabilia collectors shows here and sometimes you can find some real gems, along with a number of cons. I wish I had kept up my membership in the Motion Picture Mothers Association...that's where the stories surface! How I became a member is rather dubious, and let's just say it's not what you know, but who you know! I did get to meet some fascinating folks.

Anyway, after all that rambling, I bought "Major Barbara" from and think that RN's performance was SO superior to Rex Harrison's that I still cannot fathom WHY RN didn't get top billing! Was Rex Harrison even ACTING? I think I know why RN got the reputation for "over-acting"...he put such feeling, depth and empathy into his characters that it gave them a life of their own. It made anyone standing near him seem as if they didn't exist. Except of course Charles Laughton who was the consummate HAM, but endearing nontheless.

Until next time!
Erin

As well as four wives and three children - Sally, Nicholas who live in London, England and Kim, who lives in Washington DC - there are two grandchildren - Matthew and Jack, twins aged nine who are sending this email. They live with their father and mother, Nicholas and Caroline. Matthew says, "I'm delighted that you like his movies." and Jack added, "Especially, Treasure Island."
As Bob had two sisters, and a brother, there are many cousins (of Matthew and Jack) as well who live in England.
I hope that helps satisfy your curiosity a little bit.
There are number of people in LA who remember him, although it is getting to be a dwindling band. My father recently ran into Laureen Bacall in London who always speaks affectionately of my grandfather - he bought the Bogart's house from them in Benedict Canyon when making Around the World in 80 days. And there are others - all with tales to tell. Best wishes, M & J.

Hello Matthew & Jack!

Wow! How wonderful to share correspondence with relatives of a very talented and gifted man. I have two sons around your age and they too enjoy "Treasure Island", as well as the "Long John Silver" television series. Your grandfather continues to be a source of enjoyment and entertainment for many people of all ages. Thank you for the additional information. I like to hear the "nicer" type of stories about Mr. Newton, since I feel that far too much attention is paid to the other type.

Thanks again to Susan for maintaining such a devoted website!!

Best wishes to you all,
Erin
