Cool, somebody who actually agrees with my opinion of *both* movies! I thought I was the only one ... except for, well, you know who you are. But we are apparently in the minority.

During my current bout with insomnia I watched the Long John Silver movie and Blackbeard back to back, and ... I now have to agree with the majority of you! Now that I'm over the idea that Blackbeard the movie has almost nothing to do with the real Blackbeard--and past the cartoonish acting and bad jokes--the movie's actually starting to grow on me! At least it has a more original storyline than Long John Silver, which, now that I watch it again, suffers from sequel-itis. Whereas the TV series goes off in its own direction, the movie seems to be trying too hard to rehash all the "greatest hits" of Treasure Island. (Corniest scene: Long John reluctantly hits Jim--for his protection--then turns away and secretly rubs his own hand in pain.)

Oh well, I guess each one has its own good and bad points--but neither one comes close to the original Treasure Island.

Does anyone have a clue IF Robert Newton ever used the line, "Arr, Maynard, I'll slit 'E from ear to ear and feed 'E to the buzzards", and if so, what movie or TV serial did he use it in? I used to watch the show, and saw both movies as a young man, have used the line all my life, and cannot remember where I first heard it to save my soul ! I would appreciate hearing from someone with a better memory than mine.

If he uses the name Maynard, it has to be Blackbeard the Pirate, although I admit, I don't remember the specific line. I'll check to confirm it when I get a chance ... sounds like one for the "Great Lines" page! (Good excuse to watch the movie yet again!) Arr, thank 'e, matey!
