Here's my take on the issue... Your going to have talented singers in your choir and some are going to stand out above the rest, but to give EVERY solo to them is unjust to the collaberation of the ensemble. Your members will see it. Besides, diffrent solos will call for diffrent styles and most singers really excell in one type of singing and not in another (for example, someone may sound good singing baroque music but not gospel)

Take a look at concert choir right now. We have numerous solos that are being sung by someone diffrent, some pieces even have alternate soloists for tour. It hasn't always been like this, but I think it works for the best intrest of the choir. I can remember a time on tour where one of our soloists got sick and Cook really didn't have a replacement and instead of allowing someone to step up and take a shot, he gave it to someone who already had a solo whose style wasn't really right for the piece she was covering for. I'm not sure I agree with his decision, but in the end, it wasn't the end of the world, it worked.

Honestly, it depends on the director and what he/she feels about soloists. My take is that it should be evenly dispersed as it can be...

I think Rita is right with this. I do believe that giving solos to different people is good. However, it is determined by the people. If there is a low demand for a solo and it calls for one you just have to make due with what you have. So what I am trying to say is if you have lets say five solos in your choir's song set and you only have three people that can or want to do solos. You almost will to double up on some. But also I do not think you will ever have a shortage of people wanting to do solos. If I had a shortage of people wanting to do solos I would do my best to encourage others to step forward and give it a try. Of course how many times have you had a shortage of people wanting to sing solos.
