Subject: Innercity Teaching

If I was to end up taching at an innercity school, how do you brake down the race barrier if some students were reluctant to be participating because I was diffrent.

I went to a high school that was considered "inner city." If you are a good teacher, students won't have other reason to judge you. If there is still a barrier, find a common ground with your students and then guide them in the direction you want them to go. In that sense, its like the constructivism theory- start where they are (whether its a common ground in culture, or knowledge they already have about music).

Depending on the ages of the children you plan on teaching, you may not have any problems dealing with racial differences. Children, especially young children, ignore race and see people as people. As we get older, we stop seeing similarities and begin to see and react to differences. What age group were you planning on teaching?

Just look at it this way. Treat every kids as if you could see any race difference. This way you take out any possible racial bias. Then of course it would be easy for you to treat and the kids would respond easily. When you go into an innner city school never look at race as a problem. Also, if you work at an inner city school I have heard from alot of teachers that the state will offer to pay off some of your college education. However, you have to spend a certain amount of years in the inner city schools.

I have definitely considered teaching in an inner city school. First off, let's be real for a moment. Like Kevin stated earlier the pay is better because your atmosphere is supposedly more dangerous. Secondly, they will pay for your loans and even pay for your masters degree which is a huge bonus for us as educators. Thirdly, when my sister was teaching in the Cleveland City Schools her subjects were not standardized and as strict as the other schools of suburbia. For exampple, the science teacher was able to ask for any amount of money needed as long as it was for school purposes. He had a giant greenhouse made on the roof of the school for the students to work in before and after school.
Also, for those of you getting a BA in music and not necessarily getting a teaching certification there is such a thing as emergency certification where they will certify you for a specfic number of years to teach. Afterwards, you need to seek a teaching certificate. I do not know if this helps, but as I stated earlier I am definitely not writing off teaching in an inner city school.
