Sarah, for practicing any instrument the best thing to keep your students active over the summer is an incentive program. Start something before school ends and offer it up as a contest and come up with a large prize to give out when school begins again. Also, keeping students studying over the summer with a private teacher, this will also keep them practicing. Provide them with a list of adequate teachers and phone numbers before school lets out. Also, stress that for your ensembles chair auditions will be held the first week of school and if you practice anyone can become first chair. Hope these ideas help a bit.

In my school district back home we had a program called summer band. All the directors from the different schools came together and put this program together every summer. Students of different ages combined from the different schools in our district and became a few big ensembles. There were small classes and there were a few different bands. I really enjoyed this program while I was in school. Also, it kept me interested in my instrument over the summer. I also believe that you should encourage your students to continue on with private lessons throughout the summer too.
