I also feel that you should still hold auditions. High school tends to be filled with social drama and choosing a piece for a specific soloist can cause problems amongst peers in the class. As mentioned before, you're likely to find more than one person who can perform well on the same solo. By holding the audition, it creates an opportunity for constructive competition to earn, instead of inherit.
