Subject: Solo auditions public, private, or elected?

When I was in choir in high school my teacher auditioned all solos in front of the entire choir. This made me extremely nervous and was very unsettling to a lot of people because the songs were still somewhat new and what not. After students auditioned the ensemble voted on who they personally thought should get that particular solo. What do you think about this should solos be auditioned in front of the group or should they be done with only the teacher present? Also do you think the rest of the choir should have a say in who they think should sing the solo?

I can understand why a director might want students to audition before their peers: to judge if the student(s) can handle the pressure of performing at a concert where there will be many other people. However, auditioning on a piece that one may not be comfortable on, especially in front of the ensemble, is pretty intimidating. Instead of having the choir decide on who gets the solo, I think it should be solely decided on by the director. If he or she wants additional views, perhaps other directors could help. I do not think that all of the students would have enough responsibility to make such decisions.

i like the way my high school directors did it. We auditioned in front of the group so everyone auditioning could hear their ompetition and know that the person getting the solo deserved it and also so we knew the person could handle the pressure of singign inf front of an audience. My director then decided who got the solo's based on both talent and stage presence.

I think that the auditions should be held in front of the group because it will allow the soloists a chance to perform in front of a group of people and give them experience in that department. However, I believe that the decision of who gets the solo should lie completely on the director.

I think that it is okay to have a solo audition in front of the choir because the person is going to be singing in front of more than just the choir at the performance. But I have never heard of the students getting a say in who gets a solo. That isn't right. The teacher is the one in charge and should decide.

IN regards to what Amanda said I do not think solo auditions should be in front of everyone or that they should have a say. The choir director will choose the best for that solo, and they will have to perform the solo infront of the group eventually so its not like they will never sing it infront of people until the performance. You could hold open auditions, who ever wants the solo come in and sing it while the rest of the people who also want the solo sit and listen until it is their turn, so they get a feeling for singing infront of people but its not an overwhelming amount of people yet.
