Subject: Special Needs Students (Again!)

I recently read an article about a band director who had, in his band of 29 students, THIRTEEN students with IEPs. 8 of them had "severe disablities" while the others were merely receiving special education services of some kind. The article discussed how this particular band director included these special learners in his ensemble, and some of the things he came up with were fascinating.

I am curious to know- what do you guys think about including special needs students in band? We often hear about them being included in general music classes and even in choir, but what about band? In what ways can we make accomodations for students with special needs? What instruments should they play? How can we create a situation for them in which they will find success?

I already have MANY of my own ideas about this, as it is one aspect of music education in which I am greatly interested... So now I am curious to know what some of you think...
