Can rythem be taught to every child, or is it essential to have a natural predisposed feel for it.

I absolutely believe that rhythm can be taught to each child. Certainly it may be easier for some than others. Working with the child by having him or her pat on their shoulders to the BIG beat, until it becomes internalized, should provide the needed repetitions for success.

I definitely think so too. The earlier you start them the better off they'll be. I work with a high school drumline during marching season and there is always 1 or 2 people that want to switch over from their current instrument to play drums. This is generally a harder transition than the students think by this time. Yes you will have your hot shot natural that can do it all and that is good for them and you, but most are not like that. They just see the drums as the goof off section of the band and......which percussionists can tend to get a little crazy. I suggest starting them right off in elementary school with the rhythm sticks or what ever you call them. They can hit those together on the beat during a song that they sing. Or they could even play on conga drums or something like that. This will help them learn how to not only sing the rhythm but internalize the beat that they are playing with their particular instrument. I hope this coming from a percussionist helps you in your situation.

Rhythm can definitley be taught to every child. It may be more difficult to teach it to one child than another, but that can happen with any subject.

I think rhythm can be taught, but I think it needs to be approached in different ways. The concept of quarter notes and dotted sixteenth notes can be very overwhelming for people to learn - especially young children! I think you should teach them songs or chants that incorporate rhythms first - like that chattanooga chattanooga choo choo train chant that Dr. Owen taught us. Most kids will most likely be able to do that before reading rhythms on paper.

I agree with Cynthia. The student must first get a feel for the macrobeat, and then move to the microbeat. Next, speaking rhythms on traditional syllables is very beneficial. Usings Du's to represent the macrobeats and Du-de to represent the microbeat will greatly improve your students feel for rhythm. I also suggest the use of Dalcroze and Eurhythmics to improve rhythm. Eurhythmics involves getting the beat internalized which is THE most important factor in familiarizing yourself with rhythm. Hope this helps.
