Well I believe as a freshmen now still remebering my decison making process. I remember looking at all the colleges where I would like to go. For me it was BGSU, Heidelberg, Wittenberg, or Otterbein. I know teachers all want push their school for people to go to but the kids need to make conact with their first choice school and make a visit. Of course if you do not have any colleges in mind tell the student to search the web. You can search Yahoo for example the best Colleges in ways of Music in a certain state. You just have to look on the internet sometimes to find like organizations reviewing colleges music programs. It is out there I know that. As far as difficulty I would tell the student that if he or she wishes to try out for the college then they can. I mean nothing is SO impossible. I even tried out for University of Cincinnati's infamous CCM. They killed my songs but I did that early so they kind of corrected my errors. Just tell the child that maybe find a school that you can try out in that you know is hard to get in just so you can get feedback or even have an outside source give you feedback on your pieces. Or even how you play the songs. The student needs to do some research for colleges. Yeah you can say hey I went here and it was great but you should make a point that there maybe schools out there that best fit the student's needs the best.

I think that it is important to be truthful with the student. If he really wants to be a music major and he has the skill to do it then a music teacher should look at the list of schools the student is thinking about and just explain that some schools out there are really tough to get in and that he should not be upset if he doesn't make it. Another part of that is that some students are not cut out to be music amjors and eventual performers and teachers. When I went to some of my entrance auditions I heard some kids who just had no chance of getting into a school and really never had a chance to get a job. I think as music teachers we have a reponsibility to be honest with the good students and the students who are not as musically talented.
