Subject: Not rehearsing in the band room?

Here’s a situation to think about: You are a band/choir director in a small high school. The only music classes are band and choir. The previous band/choir director only rehearsed music with the group and maybe taught a few theoretical things as they pertained to the music. What do you do?

Should you keep it the same; only rehearse the group? Do you teach theory on one day and rehearse on the others? Do try to teach all aspects of music; theory, history, composition, etc.? Do you treat the class like any other and assign homework?

What do you do?

I think that if you were put in that situation you should talk to administration about offering other music courses as they fit with your free time. Of course the reason the school does not offer these extra courses may be because they do not have the funds. To still teach a more broad view of music you should incorporate theory and history into the curriculum. Perhaps a general view of the history and a paper would give students more background on the music they are playing. I think that your idea about reserving days for rehearsal and others for theory is a great idea. Another way to give the students more playing time would be to have them spend three hours a week in a practice room during their study halls.
