I had several schools mentioned to me by both my choir and band director in high school. If it wasn't for them I would have never even known about Heidelberg. However I think the only way that a student can truly know whether a school is right for them is to actually go on college visits and find out about the college as well as what the music program there has to offer. You also have to make sure that your student understands that some schools are much harder to get into than others. For example I applied at BGSU and they were only taking 4 flute players that year and Heidelberg didn't have a set number. The student should be aware of the skill level required to get into that school.
