Subject: Does teaching excellence really make your group or ensemble the best?

In our Music 110 class our group has chosen to debate teaching MUSIC to PEOPLE rather than teaching PEOPLE through MUSIC. One of our main points for the debate is that in teaching music to people we as teachers or ensemble directors strive for excellence and perfection rather than getting invloved with personal issues. Does striving for excellence and being mainly concerned with musical issues and competitions make for better, higher quality ensembles/musicians? Does eliminating personal issues leave more room for musical growth? We as a group would appreciate any advice you could provide.
